1. What is Dr Nik’s recommended advice in wearing retainers
After your brace treatment, you will receive retainers to hold your teeth in place. My usual retention protocol is:
- Wear the retainers full time for 3 months
- After 3 months wear the retainers every night
- You will be followed up for 1 year after the braces are removed
- After the 1 year follow up you will be advised to wear your retainers indefinitely which means 2-3 nights a week for as long as you want your teeth to be straight.
2. How long do I have to wear my retainer?
You wear your retainers for as long as you want your teeth to be straight! After 1 year of your braces being removed, I advise to wear them part time for 2-3 nights a week.
3. What are the different types of retainers?
The most common type of retainers I use are:
- Removable retainers known as Vacuum Formed Retainers (VFR)
- Fixed retainers known as Bonded Retainers
All my patients will receive a VFR but not all my patients will be prescribed a fixed bonded wire. Please see my treatment section for further information.
