Retainers to Hold your Smile

1. What is Dr Nik’s recommended advice in wearing retainers

After your brace treatment, you will receive retainers to hold your teeth in place.  My usual retention protocol is:

  • Wear the retainers full time for 3 months
  • After 3 months wear the retainers every night
  • You will be followed up for 1 year after the braces are removed
  • After the 1 year follow up you will be advised to wear your retainers indefinitely which means 2-3 nights a week for as long as you want your teeth to be straight.

2.  How long do I have to wear my retainer?

You wear your retainers for as long as you want your teeth to be straight!  After 1 year of your braces being removed, I advise to wear them part time for 2-3 nights a week.

3. What are the different types of retainers?

The most common type of retainers I use are:

  • Removable retainers known as Vacuum Formed Retainers (VFR)
  • Fixed retainers known as Bonded Retainers

All my patients will receive a VFR but not all my patients will be prescribed a fixed bonded wire.  Please see my treatment section for further information.
