Moving on from a previous blog on lingual orthodontics, I attended a course hosted by the British Lingual Orthodontic Society (BLOS). This course was a hands-on course learning about lingual braces. We had a morning of lectures followed by close supervision in placing the lingual brackets.
The particular system involves taking a mould of the teeth and sending the impression to the technician who can precisely place the brackets onto the study models. Subsequently, a stent is made which is bespoke to the patient and placed into the mouth. Therefore, once the brackets are placed, I feel confident the teeth can be predictably be moved into their correct position and produce straight teeth – ultimately the desired goal of treatment!
Treatment times can range between 3-6 months as I usually select cases requiring minimal tooth movements. The lingual braces are similar to fixed braces because they are train track braces but behind the teeth rather than the front.
I get asked the difference between lingual braces and invisalign. To me, lingual braces are very unique because they are truly THE invisible brace versus Invisalign which is discreet. Additionally, Invisalign can be removed and therefore I rely on patient compliance. Lingual braces are fixed and glued on with dental composite.
